Alex's Diary - Week 6

Day 36 – Wednesday 6/6/2012 – Kununurra Day 2
I woke up and played cars for Lachie. We drove to Wyndham and stopped at a big crocodile. It was 20 metres long and includes 5.5 kilometres of steel rods, 50kg of welding rods, 10 rolls of bird wire and 5 cubic metres of concrete! Wyndham celebrated 125 years in October last year and put a party hat on its head! We drove to Wyndham Caravan Park and saw the largest Boab tree in captivity! It was wider than me, Lachie and Mum’s arm span put together across the front! It was massive and said to be 2000 years old and was fairly soft. We went to the Croc farm but it was closed. We went to the 5 River’s Lookout. It looked over the Pentacost, Ord, King, Durack and Forest Rivers! It had an altitude of 300m! We drove back and I read Harry. I finished it. I played cars and then tip both with Lachie. I had dinner while watching ‘Babe, Pig in the City’ and went to bed.

Day 37 – Thursday 7/6/2012 – Kununurra Day 3
We woke up and had breaky. I went shopping with Mum. All the people were really nice, especially the butcher. I came back and played cars with Lachie. I then played cricket with Dad. Dad won 49-25. We played with Peter and James while their Mum and Dad set up the tent. I made them a treasure hunt while they had a chat. We then played hide and seek. They were good hiders! I also hit balls with a cricket bat for them to chase. We walked up to Kellys Point. It gave you a magnificent view over Kununurra as the sun set over the Cockburn Ranges. It looked beautiful. We drove back and went to bed.

Day 38 – Friday 8/6/2012 – Kununurra to Bungle Bungles
We woke up and packed up the tent. We saw frogs and tadpoles in a hole in the trees near Matthew, Greg and Jenny’s tent. I had breaky on the road and read the 5th Harry Potter book. We drove on 4x4 track for the last 64kms. It had a lot of corrugations and was very tree-like. We arrived and set up. We went to the car park of the walk and headed off on the Cathedral walk. The Bungle Bungles are famous for the big Beehives. Their stripes are orange and black but they are just massive rocks. In the wet season they would have had a creek run through them but now they are perfectly dry. We walked along the dry riverbed. It was a shady walk because we were amongst all the big domes. The gorge was yuck. It had bacteria in it. We walked back and saw termite mounds growing on the side of them. We got in the car and drove back. I had dinner. We used our own shower as the only facility here is a pit toilet. I went to bed.

Day 39 – Saturday 9/6/2012 – Bungle Bungles Day 1
I woke up and had breaky. We had a good time throwing the vortex which Dad had cleverly tied a rope on. There was no shower here so we were going to try to hook the solar shower up. Dad was very good and hit the tree a couple of times. He also saved the rope from being tied around the tree forever.  Mum hooked the rope between her legs and the following time round her ear! Mum eventually got it up and wasn’t confident enough to do any more. Dad hooked the shower up and I read a bit. I got a massage from Lachie. I also kicked the footy with Dad. I had lunch while driving to Echidna Chasm. We began the walk that takes you inside the Chasm. It is a big cut in the rock that goes back 200m! We walked along the rocky creek bed for 1 kilometre. All of the rocks were rounded so the water must have been flowing quite fast. When we got inside the chasm it all went cool with a nice breeze while outside it was sweltering heat and still. It would have been a nice shelter for aborigines. We ventured forwards and stopped to talk to some people. We came to an amphitheater with benches. I checked if we could go any further. We did and came to the end. Some people took photos of us. I didn’t like getting back out in the sun. We walked up to a lookout. It wasn’t very good. We got back in the car and drove to Kungkalanayi Lookout. It gave me a 360 degree panorama. The Osmond Ranges looked beautiful. I played some tennis with Mum back at the campsite. I had dinner and went to bed.

FACT: The chasm is made because there was a weak point in the rock and the water and wind penetrated it making it deeper.

Day 40 – Sunday 10/6/2012 – Bungle Bungles to Home Valley
I woke up and packed up. We got an early start and had breaky on the road. It was extremely relieving to get off the shockingly bumpy road and on to bitumen! We drove350 kilometres to Kunanurra where we went to the hospital for Lachie.  It was about a 3 hour wait so I read for most of it. I had lunch and watched the AFL. By the time we hit the road again it was just before 3. We got on the Gibb River Road and discovered it to be better than the track into the Bungle Bungles. We crossed King River but it had nothing in it. We got to the Pentecost River and Mum freaked out!!!! We got through the mighty river and watched the people behind us do it. It was about 150 metres wide and there are crocodiles in it. Mum videoed and Dad took photos of us. We set up and played on the playground. I had a big humorous conversation over dinner. Mum said Dad was ‘King of Dad jokes’ but I didn’t want to give Dad the honour of being king of anything.

FACT – Mum is funnier than Dad but I’m the funniest of all.

Day 41 – Monday 11/6/2012 – Home Valley Day 1
I woke up and played at the park. I had breaky and played some more. I got in my cossies and came out and saw horses in a paddock! We drove to Bindoola Falls. We followed the orange dots to the murky brown falls. There was a little bit up the top that had clear flowing water but the rest was horrible. I counted the dots on the way back. There were 36. We drove back and played at the park. I played hand ball with Mum. I beat mum 102 – 93 and then she beat me 115 – 57. We went to the caravan park pool and had a swim. I got the handball and versed Dad. Dad beat me 105 – 37, then I beat Dad 111 – 76 and finally Dad beat me 113-112! I played Mum again and she beat me 169 – 53! We went down to the riverside for sunset. There were a lot of gates and cows on the road! It wasn’t much of a sunset but we saw ripples on the water that we thought were crocs! We had dinner and went to bed.

Day 42 – Tuesday 12/6/2012 – Home Valley to Drysdale Station
I woke up and had breaky. I didn’t have to help pack up and Mum let me play with Jack, an eleven year old who supports Geelong. We played kick and catch over a suspended tunnel in the playground. We said goodbye and hit the extremely bumpy road. Dad’s shocking fuel economy reached 67.5 at one point! I read and had lunch. I read some more. We set up at a dud campsite.  The amenities were horrible and the grass spiky. The petrol was expensive and no pool, playground or any other features. I read and went to bed.

FACT – On 4 month holidays you meet lots of kids from all over Australia.
